Our Christmas Tree

We get a real tree every year. Back in Fort Wayne we'd go to a local tree farm and select, then cut our own. This year's tree is a Grand Fir purchased from the Navy Exchange (NEX). We try to get our tree the second weekend in December and leave it up right until last call for tree recycling pick-up. Typically, Sailor Mom and I place on the lights and the topper and then let the kids go nuts with the non-breakable ornaments, we supervise the breakable ones. This year we searched and found a "First Christmas" ornament for Pumpkin.

We also tried a new tradition when we found an ornamental pickle at Target. The story goes that a union solder during the civil war was in prison on Christmas Eve. He was starving to death and begged his jailers for food. One of the captors was merciful and gave him a pickle to ease his hunger. After his release he told his family about the ordeal and made an ornamental pickle and told his family it would bring health and luck to the person who found it on the tree. So we ended Christmas Eve with a pickle search on the tree that was short lived but entertaining and fun.
