Being Frugal

Here are some ways we try to be frugal-- (written originally 01 Dec 2010)

Our home is full of re-usable products (napkins, diapers, wipes, AF -- still trying to convince Hubby about paper towels, though they are used way less now).  We keep all of our children's clothes, shoes, blankets, coats, everything that's still in good condition.  We were given a bag of hand-me-downs with our youngest, but that is the only hand-me-downs we've ever received.  They were always given to other family members, which is why we keep ours.  We comparison shop to an extent and look at the store ads.  We also eat lots more fruits and vegetables than we used to.

We eat nearly all of our meals at home, only out of necessity and traveling do we eat out (even then we try to plan ahead and bring snacks or stuff to make sandwiches).

We don't use coupons as most of the products are not ones we buy (processed foods or things with high numbers according to the Cosmetic Safety Database).  We like the coupons that Fresh & Easy sends, e.g., save $5.00 off $25.00 on anything except alcohol or dairy (might include tobacco, but I can't find our recent one).

We keep a budget and we reconcile our expenses.  We update our future budget to better reflect current costs, income, needs, and spending habits.  We have long term goals.  We pay tithing first, then savings and bills, then perishable/fluctuating expenses.  Our savings isn't what we want it to be, and that is a struggle for us.  We mainly have an emergency fund, someday we want long term.

For big purchases, we sleep on it.  For a month.  Or more.  Unless its an emergency, then we still try to wait 24hrs to make sure its a can't live without it.
